A medical doctor born in 1951, he is a very well-known politician and member of the Muslim Brotherhood untill 2011. He then ran for Egyptian presidency as an independent party in 2012. He was arrested on 14 February 2018 after coming back from London where he had interviews with BBC and Al-Jazira, during which he spoke about the situation in Egypt. He was accused of terror charges that include joining a terrorist group, and spreading false news, without any evidence. He remains under provisional arrest for over 3 years, although the Egyptian law only allows provisional arrests for a maximum of 24 months. He is suffering from many violations, including denying him contact with his lawyer, denying him access to healthcare despite being ill and injured, and solitary confinement.
